Kapu marriage procedure: Rituals at Bride’s Home before Marriage

  1. Koyya Naatu: It signifies the beginning of the wedding rituals
  2. Nalugu: Relatives and Guests will be applying Oil on the head. Sandal Paste and Turmeric paste will be applied on the cheeks. Each Guest/ Relative put bangles to the Girl. The girl will be offering Thambulam to each Guest followed by their blessings. After Nalugu, The bride not allowed to step out of the home alone.
  3. Mangal Snanam: Hot water will be mixed with Turmeric powder, Sandal powder, Rosewater, Rose Petals, Flowers etc. Relatives/ Guests will be performing the head bath for the girl.

Kapu marriage procedure: Rituals at Groom’s Home before Marriage

  1. Koyya Naatu: Similar thing at Boy’s house as well.
  2. Nalugu: Relatives and Guests will be applying Oil on the head. Sandal Paste and Turmeric paste will be applied on the cheeks. The boy will be offering Thambulam to each Guest followed by their blessings. After Nalugu, The Groom not allowed to step out of the home alone. Not supposed to leave the town.
  3. Mangal Snanam: Same applies for the Groom as well.

Rituals at Function Hall: Kapu marriage procedure

  1. Welcome: Bride’s family reaches the Mandapam much in early to welcome the Groom’s family.
  2. Reception (Optional): Guests will be greeting the Couple followed by the Food arrangements.
  3. Sangyam: It changes with region to region. Groom’s family place the Gold items brought for the girl and other gifts in a plate. This is treated as the prestigious event to showcases themselves.
  4. Kanyadanam: Bride’s father and mother clean the Groom’s feet with water. Groom is treated here as Maha Vishnu and Bride as Sri Maha Lakshmi. In the case of Parents absence, Relatives can perform this ritual.
  5. Jeelakarra Bellam: Purohit will be mixing Jeelakarra and Bellam. It marks that the couple should have such attachment in their life. On the auspicious time (Muhurtham), Bride and Groom place this mix on each other’s head.
  6. Mangalasutra Dharana: Here, it changes with region to region. Thalli Bottu( From Bride’s family) will be tied by the Mother. Another Bottu will be tied by the Groom.
  7. Sapthapadi: Now the Couple goes around the holy fire together for seven steps.
  8. Appaginthalu: This is the last ritual, where the Bride’s family handed of their loving daughter to the Grooms’ family.
  9. Gruha Pravesam: Now the Bride steps into their in-law’s house for the first time.
